The domains of blue growth, blue carbon and climate change (BBC) have interlinked mixed impacts for societies and ecosystems, and demand highly innovative and integrated solutions. Dakshin aims to expand our thematic reach in these domains to establish Ocean Solutions – an in-house interdisciplinary solutions-based service/facility that caters to identify local challenges and opportunities (human and ecological) in our geographies of operation, and by co-designing with communities and government bodies, tangible nature-based solutions to arrest marine resource degradation and promote human well-being.

The growing interest in harnessing Indian Ocean resources for growth and economic development demands solutions to guard against overexploitation and securing sustainable and equitable carbon pathways crucial for maritime India. However, significant expert-driven knowledge, data and intervention gaps characterize present-day public and private sector programmes, policies and instruments on blue growth and blue carbon and climate finance. 

Our Ocean Solutions’ portfolio fixes this through the following actions:

a) dynamic mapping and monitoring India’s blue carbon habitats

b) developing sustainable ocean-based enterprise solutions 

c) promoting equitable and responsible carbon-neutral development pathways.

The Ocean Solutions facility comprises qualified domain experts to realize this portfolio to recast blue economy trajectories in the Indian Ocean before 2030. It would boost critical scientific knowledge in the public domain on marine resources and socio-ecological dynamics, identify enabling conditions and promote real-time practices and strategies to equitably transfer benefits to vulnerable and marginalised coastal communities.

Ocean Solutions includes the creation of a dynamic Blue Carbon Atlas of India to serve as a resource for state and non-state actors who are oriented towards responsible climate action. Using the Blue Carbon Atlas of India as a core database, we will set up and launch a Blue Economy Enterprises (BEE) Hive to serve as a clearing house for climate action focused on our geographies of operation. The BEE Hive will enable quick aggregation of ideas related to piloting, matching and up-scaling of income-generation and livelihood intervention modules that are sustainable, equitable and context-specific.
