Profile: Sipra Das is an environmental researcher with interests in microplastic pollution, biodiversity conservation, and community engagement.
Her M.Sc. research thesis focused on an in-depth analysis of microplastic contamination in surface waters across India, investigating pollution levels, sources, distribution patterns, and environmental impacts. Her B.Sc. project examined the potential of banana fibres for textile production as an eco-friendly alternative to conventional materials.
She has worked as a Research Intern with the Regional Museum of Natural History (MoEFCC), focusing on environmental awareness among schoolchildren in Odisha, and with the State Pollution Control Board, Odisha, assessing nutrient levels and chlorophyll concentrations in the coastal waters near Paradeep.
She served as a Project Officer with Give Me Trees Trust in Pune, contributing to documentation, biodiversity reporting, preparing scientific case studies, biodiversity photography, and organising environmental awareness programmes and nature walks for schoolchildren, local communities, and CSR partners.
She has received specialised training in marine biodiversity DNA barcoding through SERB, Government of India, and completed foundational training in Faecal Sludge Treatment Plant (FSTP) operations and maintenance with WaterAid. A WASH Champion with WaterAid India and a member of UNESCO’s Media and Information Literacy Alliance, she actively engages in climate education, women’s empowerment, healthcare outreach, and sustainability initiatives.
She currently serves at Dakshin as a Programme Assistant in the Community and Resource Governance team, where she coordinates the Coastal Grassroots Fellowship in Ganjam, Odisha.
