Profile: From a very young age, the ocean had always intrigued Sharon. This early curiosity led her to pursue a major in Zoology during her undergraduate studies, which she later continued at the master’s level. As a resident of Odisha, she had always visited the beach and felt passionate about working with marine organisms. Determined to focus her master’s dissertation on marine animals, she came across Prof. Kartik Shanker’s lab, which specialises in marine flagship species, especially sea turtles. She was fortunate enough to be selected to join the lab, where she conducted her dissertation research on the effects of plastic and heavy metal pollution on the eggs and hatchlings of olive ridley turtles along the Rushikulya and Devi coasts.
Currently at Dakshin, she works as a Programme Associate on the long-term monitoring of olive ridley turtles in Rushikulya, studying how temperature affects their sex ratio. In her free time, you’ll find her behind a canvas or out under the sky with music, looking at the stars.
