Profile: Namrata has always been fascinated by the ocean, the life it supports, and the stories hidden beneath its surface. This curiosity led her to pursue an M.Sc. in Zoology with a specialization in Oceanography from the University of Mumbai. Keen to explore environmental research through a different lens, she later completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Remote Sensing and GIS Technology from K. J. Somaiya College.

Her journey into marine research began at the ICAR–Central Institute of Fisheries Education (CIFE), Mumbai, where she studied the food and feeding habits of fish along the Mumbai coast as part of her dissertation. Curious about the larger ecosystems that support marine life, she later turned to remote sensing and GIS to study changes in Mumbai’s mangrove cover using satellite imagery. She presented this work at an international conference, where engaging with researchers from diverse disciplines further strengthened her interest in coastal ecosystem research.

Before joining Dakshin Foundation, Namrata ventured into the poultry sector, gaining valuable experience in communication, stakeholder engagement, and problem-solving. While it was a rewarding chapter, the pull of the coast eventually brought her back to environmental research. Her interests include marine ecology, fisheries, coastal ecosystems, and conservation. Beyond work, she is often found on a nature trail, birdwatching, or chatting with people and listening to their stories.
