Profile: Kavitha’s interest in marine ecosystems began during her dissertation on reef fish aggregations with the Department of Science and Technology in Kavaratti Island, Lakshadweep. Her work involved comparing reef fish aggregations between two coral transplantation sites. After graduating from Cochin, she joined the Wildlife Institute of India to work on sea turtles along the Kerala and Lakshadweep coastlines, where she monitored nesting patterns of olive ridley and green sea turtles.
During her time in the field, Kavitha developed an interest in elasmobranchs and coral reef ecosystems. She enjoys sketching and painting in her spare time, particularly underwater landscapes.
Currently at Dakshin, she works on the green turtle monitoring project in the Lakshadweep Islands, which focuses on assessing the population of green sea turtles and seagrass in Agatti, Bangaram, Kadmat, and Kalpeni. She is also involved in tagging and tracking green sea turtles in the region.
