Profile: Apna Kuruvilla’s journey as an artist and architect is deeply rooted in the lessons of her childhood. Growing up, she watched her mother meticulously conserve every drop of water, turning resourcefulness into a way of life. This sensitivity to the environment and social equity shaped Apna’s perspective early on, instilling in her a deep awareness of the world around her. As an architect, she learned the language of spaces and user adaptability, but it was during her master’s that she began crafting narratives of communities like women, migrants, and the marginalised who shape the lifeblood of the city yet remain unseen.
An emerging information artist and designer, Apna delves into the intricacies of diasporic identity and the emotional ties that bind people to places. Her creative journey explores nostalgia, home, and belonging through mixed media, weaving vibrant narratives that invite audiences on a voyage of self-discovery and cultural reflection. Apna thrives on collaboration, believing in the power of storytelling to bridge perspectives across generations. As Design Officer at Dakshin Foundation, she looks forward to fostering these creative exchanges, helping others find their voices through art, while continuing her own pursuit of storytelling that both empathises and empowers.
